What so Green in Green Buildings?

Many times we come across terminology "Green Building" and wonder why they call it green, finally after much contemplation we conclude it might just have lots of green vegetation, trees, plantation, roof garden giving it a greener look so they call it Green Building. Isn't it? NO.... Wait....  You guessed wrong. Its not just about green lawns and roof gardens.

"Green Buildings" are also called Sustainable Buildings as are designed to minimize its impact on humans and surrounding environment during its construction and through its life cycle. Green Buildings are typically designed with maximum use of recycled, reused material and renewable resources.

Green Buildings are so designed that it ensure:
  • Efficient use of Energy and Water.
  • Protection of occupants health and comfort
  • Minimal waste generation.

Tangible Benefits:
  • Energy Savings- 30-40%
  • Water Savings- 30-50%
Intangible Benefits:
  • Enhanced indoor air quality
  • Good day lighting
  • Enhanced occupants comfort.
  • Improves productivity of occupants
  • Adds to corporate image.
To certify Green Buildings, many countries have certifying bodies which have rating system. Each has particular sets of criteria, for satisfying each criteria points/credit will be allotted and on the basis of final total certification is issued. In India, currently there are two certifying bodies which are handling various infrastructure projects
  1. IGBC (Indian Green Building Council)
  2. GRIHA ( Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)
Green Buildings in India
IGBC and GRIHA both have different set criterias and different rating system. As per IGBC Platinum is the highest rating building can achieve and in GRIHA *****(five star) is highest rating may be alloted to building.

  2. Ashok Leyland Corporate Office, Chennai- Gold Rated by IGBC
  3. Common Wealth Games Village, New Delhi - ** Rated by GRIHA
  4. Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering Building, IIT Kharagpur - ***** Rated by Griha
  5. And many more

On conclusive note Green Building are not only buildings with all greenery but they are made from recycled, reused or renewable sources, ensuring savings in Energy and Water from the day one of its operation. Yes it is little costly to construct than conventional but it pays back well.
